"The
monastic life has but one rule, the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and one goal, our salvation. Accordingly, the monks, nuns, and
companions of New Skete are striving to live the Christian life as
fully as possible, by becoming true disciples of the Gospel."
from the Monastic Typicon of New Skete.
New Skete is a contemplative monastic community of men and women dedicated to living the monastic life together within the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. We are a stavropegial monastery under Metropolitan Herman of the Orthodox Church in America. We consist of the Monks of New Skete, the Nuns of New Skete, and the Companions of New Skete. Each of the three communities lives in separate houses within three miles of each other outside the small village of Cambridge in rural upstate New York. This web site is that of the monks.
We
are delighted that you have come to visit us and we invite you to
explore our entire site. To learn more about the monastic life at New
Skete, we recommend that you go to About.

Divine Canine
Divine Canine, published by Hyperion Books, uses the stories of real-life dogs to illustrate how the monks teach the basics: sit, heel, stay, down, come. The beautiful full-color photographs and step-by step guides eliminate guesswork by allowing readers to learn training secrets alongside owners of pets like Hugo, an affectionate bulldog with overly-friendly urges. A series of “what if” sidebars and Q&As organized around such broader topics as feeding, exercise, and medical care fill in any blanks. Reading DIVINE CANINE will allow you to:
- Master obedience basics
- Understand your dog’s actions
- Learn the proper use of rewards and praise
- Tackle problem behavior
- Enhance the bond between you and your dog.
